New Microscope Developed at MBL Reveals Nanoscale Structural Dynamics in Live Cells
New Microscope MBL Nanoscale Structural Dynamics Live Cells
2016/10/10
Scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) and colleagues have unveiled a new microscope that can track the position and orientation of individual molecules in living cells—nanoscale measure...
As more and more people migrate to the world's coasts, their impacts are increasingly felt. In many countries, the majority of the population now lives few tens of kilometers of the coastline and as a...
On the Existence of a Fully Developed Wind-Sea Spectrum
Wind-Sea Spectrum wave-wave interaction equilibrium solution
2009/1/20
We consider the energy transfer equation for well-developed ocean waves under the influence of wind, and study the conditions for the existence of an equilibrium solution in which wind input, wave-wav...
An Observation of the Directional Wave Spectrum Evolution from Shoreline to Fully Developed
Surface Contour Radar Directional Wave Spectrum Evolution Fully Developed
2008/12/30
The Surface Contour Radar (SCR) is a 36-GHz computer-controlled airborne system, which produces ocean directional wave spectra with much higher angular resolution than pitch-and-roll buoys. SCR observ...
Eddy Amplitudes and Fluxes in a Homogeneous Model of Fully Developed Baroclinic Instability
Eddy Amplitudes Baroclinic Instability Homogeneous Model
2008/12/12
A horizontally homogeneous two-layer quasigeostrophic model with imposed environmental vertical shear is used to study eddy energies and fluxes in the regime in which an inverse barotropic energy casc...
Recent tests of all generations of numerical wave models indicate that extreme wave heights are significantly underpredicted by these models. This behavior is consistent with the finding by Ewing and ...
Valuable mineral resources are widely distributed throughout the seabed. autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are preferable to remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) when probing for such mineral resources as the extensive exploration area makes it difficult to maintain contact with operators. AUVs depend on batteries, so their power consumption should be reduced to extend exploration time. Power for conventional marine instrument systems is incorporated in their waterproof sealing. External intermittent control of this power source until termination of exploration is challenging due to limitations imposed by the underwater environment. Thus, the AUV must have a power control system that can improve performance and maximize use of battery capacity. The authors developed such a power control system with a three-step algorithm. It automatically detects underwater operational states and can limit power, effectively decreasing power consumption by about 15%.
surface piercing propeller boundary element method hydrodynamic characteristics
2011/9/13
Demand for high-speed marine vehicles (HSMVs) is high among both commercial and naval users. It is the duty of the marine vessel’s designer to provide a hull and propulsion system that diminishes drag...

Role of wetlands and developed land use on dissolved organic nitrogen concentrations and DON/TDN in northeastern U.S. rivers and streams
Role of wetlands developed land dissolved organic nitrogen concentrations DON/TDN northeastern U.S. rivers and streams
2014/5/19
Previous studies have shown that watersheds with significant human development (i.e., urban and agricultural land use) generally have higher concentrations and fluxes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (...
